Back by popular demand and expanded with even more skills to choose from — our Skill Sessions are for intermediate or advanced riders who are comfortable on trails like Highline, Soft Yogurt and EKG. Riders registering for these session should be confident on their bike and be proficient with braking, riding in control and riding uneven terrain. Skill Session Dates & Descriptions

Riding Trail Structures (Canmore or Banff)

June 26 (Canmore) from 6:15 to 8:45 pm
August 30 (Banff) from 6:15 to 8:45 pm

Learn how to ride a variety of built structures on our local freeride-style trails (Mosquito Bite in Canmore and Star Wars in Banff). Coach Tracey Gage will take riders through all the steps to learn how to ride fun trail features like skinnies, teeter-totters, camel humps, wall rides, rock rolls and small drops. Tracey’s specialty is creating a safe and encouraging environment that will have riders stoked with what they can accomplish with a little coaching and some practice! These trails and sessions are SUPER fun — don’t miss out!

Please note:
A full suspension bike is recommended for this session (front suspension a must). Arm pads and knee pads are also recommended but not required. Participants must have flat pedals and flat shoes on for this session.


Jumps & Drops (Canmore)

May 30 from 6:15 to 8:45 pm – FULL
June 6 from 6:15 to 8:45 pm (co-ed): Fundraiser for CAMBA!
August 2 from 6:15 to 8:45 pm

Learn a variety of bike maneuvers that will help you feel the rush of some wheel air time while building confidence and bike handling skills. Coach Tracey Gage (May 30, August 2: women only sessions) and Coach Gavin Conner (June 6: co-ed session) will start you off with rolling small drops, learning several wheel lifts and build up to larger drops and table top jumps. All this will be done in a local bike park.

Descending the Steeps (Canmore)

June 11 & 25 from 1:00 to 3:30 pm
July 27 or August 8 from 6:15 to 8:45 pm

Want to be able to tackle those steep sections of trail with confidence and ease? This skill session will offer up tips and techniques to take your skills on the steeps to the next level. Body position, braking, line selection, gaining time on descents and the mental game will be covered. We are stoked to have RMCC All Mountain Program (AMP) Head Coach and Enduro racing machine Kevin Eaton as our coach for this session. Based on last year’s sessions, where everyone wanted more coaching time with Kevin, we’ve made this a two-part session.

… and Coach Matt Monod will also run single session Descending the Steeps on July 27 or August 8 from 6:15 to 8:45 pm.

Intro to Bunnyhops

July 3 from 6:15 to 8:45 pm (co-ed)

Want to get more pop, hop and play out of your ride? Join Coach Gavin Conner, rad bike skills guru, for this session to get your wheel lifts amped! Gavin will build from front wheel lifts into manuals and bunnyhops with step-by-step coaching. Then we’ll take it to the trail to put the new skills into action. Note: this session is open to men & women.


NEW! Cornering With Speed (Canmore)

June 5 from 6:15 to 8:45 pm – FULL

Getting off the brakes and getting your body position dialled to tackle corners with more speed can be a huge breakthrough for many riders. Join RMCC rad rider and coach Matt Monod, who will break it all down and show you how to shred corners in this session.


NEW! Carrying Speed … a.k.a. PB Your Strava Times! (Canmore or Banff)

Canmore Session: Coach Brian Bain has tons of expertise using technique and skill to maximize efficiency on rolling terrain. Through his years racing on the Canada Cup circuit, Brian has built a toolkit of tricks on gearing, pumping, line selection and dealing with terrain changes that will help you ride faster — without working harder!

Banff Session: No one has better insight on how ride the fun and rolling trails of Tunnel Mountain with speed than RMCC Coach and Banff QOM Alex Eaton! Alex will share a variety of tips to carry speed through sections of trail to improve your technical mastery of the trails she knows inside and out … and help you on your way as a speed queen!


Technical Climbing (Canmore)

June 6 (Canmore) from 6:15 pm to 8:15 pm
June 27 (Banff) from 6:15 pm to 8:15 pm

Want to learn how to clean some of those tricky, techie sections on your climbs? Roots, rocks, logs, tight corners, loose sections … “Queen of Climbing” Coach Martha Handford will break it all down and share her secrets to help you become a climbing machine! This session was super, super popular last year.

Note: also check out our MTB 301 5-week program, as learning to climb more technical terrain is a component of this new program. 


Switchbacks (Banff)

July 19 (Banff) from 6:15 to 8:45 pm

After a quick review of climbing & descending technique and body position, we will ramp it up by adding some corners into the mix! Coach Alex Eaton will share her switchbacking expertise with tips and techniques to get you sending those tricky corners on climbs and descents. We will hit the advanced technical trails on Tunnel Mountain to put it all into action.


Bike Park 101

Interested to see what riding in a bike park is all about? Coach Tracey Gage will show you the fun to be had playing around in the skills park and on lift-accessed trails at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. More details will be available in spring 2017. Email us if you’re interested to hear more, and we’ll send you the info when we’re ready to roll.



Session Costs

Only $55* per session + RMCC membership/insurance

* Descending the Steeps two-part session is $110.

Please Note:
All participants require a mountain bike (either front or dual suspension) in good, working condition and a helmet. Bike gloves are strongly recommended. Come prepared for changing weather conditions, as we will not let the rain stop us!
