James Kendal | Youth Road Coach
James developed a love for cycling at a young age after leaving competitive swimming and started his racing journey in the Edmonton area when he was just thirteen. Cycling was freedom to explore endless roads in and around Edmonton but learning how to race and find a pathway to racing was cryptic at the time. James’s coaching philosophy is is rooted in helping athletes reach their full potential and guide them on the pathway towards excellence and passion for a lifelong love of sport.
James achieved quick success, becoming a national champion in Team Pursuit as well as Silver in the Points Race at the 1985 national Track Championships. James also won multiple provincial championships in Road, Time Trial and Hill Climb.
After a considerable break, James rediscovered his passion for cycling upon relocating to Canmore in 2010 and began racing again, starting from the bottom, James worked his way back to an elite Category 2 roadie within a couple of seasons with a particularly emphasis on criteriums and cyclocross races. In 2023 James dialed back racing and shifted his attention towards the next generation of cyclists and stepped in as our road coach. To James’ surprise, he found coaching to be even more rewarding than racing and brings an encouraging and supportive philosophy to his coaching outlook.
Since joining RMCC in 2010, James has been an active club member and dedicated a number of years to various leadership positions such as President and Treasurer. Additionally, he serves as a volunteer cyclocross coach and race organizer. James’ contributions extend beyond our local community and served on the Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA) board of directors from 2015 to 2023.
When he is not on his bike, James enjoys alpine skiing and passionately supporting his daughter’s competitive swimming endeavours with the Bow Valley Riptides Swim Club.
